Cruise shore excursions: ship tour or go independent?

Coastal town harbour with boats

The ship’s tour desk sells peace of mind. The town outside sells the real place. You can use both on one cruise — just not blindly.

Book the ship when…

  • The port is far from the highlight and transport is fiddly.
  • You need accessibility support or a guaranteed return.
  • It is your first call in a country where you do not speak the language.

Go independent when…

  • The old town is walkable from the dock.
  • Public transport or a reputable taxi rank is obvious.
  • You only need two or three hours and hate group pacing.
