Should you hire an EV for a road trip?

Electric car charging at a station

Electric hire cars are quieter, often nicer to drive, and occasionally cheaper — until you meet a mountain pass with one slow charger and a queue.

EV works well when…

  • Your daily distances fit comfortably inside real-world range (not the brochure).
  • Hotels list destination chargers you can book.
  • You enjoy planning stops as part of the day, not as emergencies.

Stick to petrol/diesel when…

  • You are covering remote stretches with thin charging maps.
  • Winter cold will cut range and you already planned long days.
  • The rental contract’s charging / late-return rules look punitive.
