Travel insurance: what to actually check before you buy

Travel insurance is not exciting until you need it. Buy it for the clauses, not the logo.

Must-check list

  1. Medical and repatriation limits for your destination.
  2. Cancellation cover: what triggers it, and proof you will need.
  3. Exclusions for pre-existing conditions — declare properly.
  4. Adventure activities: skiing, scooters, diving often need add-ons.
  5. Tech and baggage limits (phones are usually capped).

Compare two reputable policies on the same dates. Cheapest is fine only if the medical limit is still serious.
