Skiing in Europe does not have to mean Courchevel prices. These places still feel like a proper winter holiday when you watch lift passes, lodging and food as one number.
Austria — lively, organised, often fair value
Mayrhofen and the Zillertal valley give you a big linked area without Paris-level hotel rates if you stay in a gasthof or apartment. Sölden is higher and glacier-backed — good for early or late season when lower resorts turn to slush.
Italy — food that saves the budget
Livigno’s duty-free quirk and apartment culture help families. Bardonecchia and the Via Lattea side can be softer on price than the Aosta showpieces. Factor train or transfer time from Turin or Milan.
Andorra — high, sunny, package-friendly
Grandvalira is huge for the money. Packages from the UK still appear regularly. It is not the prettiest chocolate-box village scene — it is a ski factory that works.
France — pick the valley, not the famous name
Les Deux Alpes and Serre Chevalier often undercut the Trois Vallées for similar vertical. Avoid French February school holidays unless you enjoy paying for the privilege.
How to keep the total sane
- Travel outside UK and local peak weeks where you can.
- Self-cater or half-board beats three mountain restaurants a day.
- Watch kit hire online before the resort desk.
- Compare package vs DIY flights + transfer + apartment.
