Iceland Ring Road: best stops and places to stay

Icelandic waterfall and green summer landscape

Iceland’s Ring Road is simple on paper (Route 1, one loop) and demanding in weather. Plan overnight bases, not twelve photo stops with a midnight hotel.

Suggested overnight spine

  1. Reykjavík — arrive, collect car next morning.
  2. Vík / south coast — waterfalls, black sand, glacier views.
  3. Höfn or nearby — gateway to glacier lagoons.
  4. Egilsstaðir / east — slower fjord driving.
  5. Akureyri or Mývatn — north highlights.
  6. Snæfellsnes or back to Reykjavík — depending on days left.

Places to stay

  • Farmstays and guesthouses beat lonely fuel-station hotels for breakfast and advice.
  • Hot-tub guesthouses on the south coast are worth the splurge once.
  • In peak summer, book as soon as flights are locked.

Driving notes

Wind can move cars. F-roads need the right vehicle and confidence. Fuel up when you can. Download offline maps. The Ring Road is the holiday — leave slack for weather days.
