Most “genius travel hacks” are ads. These are the habits that quietly save time, money and arguments — wherever you are going.
Documents you can reach when the phone dies
- A photo of your passport, visas, insurance and bookings in an offline album — and one printed copy in a different bag.
- Check entry rules a week out, not at the gate. Rules change; blogs lag.
- If you need an ETA, ESTA or similar, do it before you pack. They are not hard. They are easy to forget.
Money without the theatre
A fee-free card plus a small amount of local cash for the first taxi and the stall that does not take cards is still the calmest setup. Tell your bank you are travelling if they still want that. Withdraw from a bank ATM, not the tourist kiosk with the “guaranteed rate”.
Pack for the week you booked
- One pair of shoes you can walk a city in. Dress shoes are optional; blisters are not.
- A layer for air-con, wind on deck, and evening. Even hot places have one cold room.
- Medicines in original packaging, plus a copy of the prescription if you are flying.
- Leave a third of the bag empty. You are not a mule for souvenirs on day one.
Stay reachable without roaming shock
An eSIM or a local SIM is cheaper than most “just use it, it’s included” plans once you start mapping and messaging. Download offline maps before you leave wifi. Screenshot boarding passes and hotel addresses.
Tips are only useful if they leave you calmer. If a hack needs three apps and a spreadsheet, it is not a tip — it is a hobby.
