Rome rewards location more than thread count. On a first visit you want a walkable base, a metro or tram option, and a bed quiet enough that the Trevi fountain soundtrack stays outside.
Centro storico
Best for short stays and first-timers who want to stroll to piazzas after dinner. Pay for a well-reviewed mid-range or boutique; a “bargain” on a main square often means 2am chatter. Look for rooms on courtyards or higher floors.
Prati
Residential, good food, Ottaviano metro. Ideal if the Vatican is high on your list and you want supermarket breakfasts. Slightly less postcard outside the door — much easier nights.
Monti
Village feel, indie shops, walkable to the Colosseum. Boutique hotels and stylish B&Bs shine here. Bags + cobbles: pack soft luggage.
Trastevere
Magical evenings, lively nights. Choose carefully: family travellers and light sleepers should read recent “noise” reviews. A quieter side street beats a famous square.
