The Mediterranean is crowded with ships. The line you pick changes the noise level, the dress code and how rushed the ports feel — more than the destination list does.
Big contemporary ships
Pros: entertainment, family facilities, frequent deals. Cons: more queues, more upselling, ports shared with three other megaships. Best if you want the ship as a floating resort.
Premium / mid-premium
Slightly fewer people per square metre, better specialty dining included or discounted, quieter pools. Good for couples and mixed-age families who still want a show at night.
Luxury & expedition-light
Higher headline fare, more included (drinks, tips, sometimes excursions). Worth it if à la carte extras on a big ship would catch you anyway.
Med-specific advice
- Check hours in port — a 1pm–8pm call in Rome’s port is not “a day in Rome”.
- Western Med loops (Spain/France/Italy) differ from Greek island hops — pick the culture you want.
- Summer heat: balcony vs inside is a real comfort decision.
