The ship’s tour desk sells peace of mind. The town outside sells the real place. You can use both on one cruise — just not blindly.
Book the ship when…
- The port is far from the highlight and transport is fiddly.
- You need accessibility support or a guaranteed return.
- It is your first call in a country where you do not speak the language.
Go independent when…
- The old town is walkable from the dock.
- Public transport or a reputable taxi rank is obvious.
- You only need two or three hours and hate group pacing.
