Hand luggage only: the airline rules that actually matter

Airport terminal seating and departure boards

Hand luggage only is a brilliant way to travel light — and a brilliant way for airlines to upsell you at the gate. The difference is knowing which rule they enforce.

Three numbers to check

  1. Maximum cabin dimensions (usually in cm, including wheels).
  2. Whether a personal item is separate or instead of a cabin case.
  3. Weight limit — some airlines care, some only care about size.

Gate reality

On full flights, even valid cabin bags get tagged for the hold. Keep essentials (meds, passport, chargers, a layer) in a small personal bag you can pull out in seconds.

Packing that survives inspection

  • Soft sides compress; hard shells argue with gauges.
  • Liquids still follow security rules — plan refillable toiletries.
  • Wear the bulky shoes and jacket; pack the thin layers.

If the fare only stays cheap with a tiny bag, believe the fare. Pack to that truth, or buy the cabin bag online before you fly.
