A cruise can be a brilliant holiday: you unpack once, wake up somewhere new, and the logistics of hotels and trains disappear. It can also be a floating resort that costs more than the brochure, with too little time ashore. Both things can be true.
When a cruise is actually a good idea
- One cabin, several places — ideal if you like the idea of three countries in a week but hate changing hotels.
- Sea days are the point for some people. If you want to read, swim and eat, a ship is a resort that moves.
- Home-port sailings avoid a flight. Fly-cruises spend more time in the destination and add airport risk.
- Families can split. Kids’ clubs exist; whether they are good depends on the line and the week — read recent reviews.
The costs the headline fare hides
Advertised prices often include meals in the main dining room and a cabin. They often do not include drinks, speciality restaurants, wifi, shore excursions, gratuities, or flights on a fly-cruise. Price the week you will actually live.
| Extra | What to do |
|---|---|
| Drinks package | Do the maths. Modest wine-with-dinner may be cheaper à la carte. |
| Wifi | Decide if you need it. Some lines now include a basic plan — check. |
| Tips / service charge | Auto-added per person per day on many lines. Include it. |
| Excursions | In many ports you can walk or use a bus. Research one independent option. |
| Fly-cruise flights | Compare the package against cruise-only plus your own tickets. |
How to pick a first cruise that will not feel like a mistake
- Keep it to seven nights if you are unsure. Fourteen nights is a long time to discover you dislike ship life.
- Choose an itinerary with places you already want to see, not the cheapest loop.
- Look at hours in port, not just the names. An 08:00–14:00 call far from the dock is a postcard, not a visit.
- An inside cabin is fine for sleepers; it is grim if you need daylight.
- Match the ship to your volume tolerance. Mega-ships are theme parks. Smaller ships are quieter and usually cost more.
A cruise is worth it if you value ease and variety more than deep time in one place, and if you have priced the extras. Book it for the right reasons and it can still feel a little bit magical when the coastline appears at breakfast.
