Road trip essentials: pacing, packing and not ruining the drive

A good road trip feels like freedom. A bad one feels like a commute with luggage. The difference is almost never the car — it is how far you try to go, and whether anyone still likes each other at the hotel.

Pace the days like a human

  • Jet-lagged or ferry-tired people should not do a six-hour transfer on day one.
  • Four hours of driving is a full day once you add views, lunch and getting lost.
  • Build a rest day every three or four days — a town with a walk and a washing machine.
  • Arrive before dark if you can, especially on unfamiliar roads.

The car bits people skip

Fuel type and tollsWrong fuel is an expensive story. Toll tags surprise visitors.

Pack the car, not a house

  1. A soft bag beats a rigid suitcase you cannot squash behind a seat.
  2. One bag of “car stuff”: charger, wet wipes, paper map backup, painkillers, a jumper.
  3. Food for the gaps between towns. Pretty regions close their kitchens on a Tuesday.
  4. Leave space. You will buy olive oil, a magnet, and a jumper you did not need.

The point of the road is the bits between the pins. If the itinerary only works at motorway speed, it is not a road trip — it is a deadline.
