A long layover can be a gift or a punishment. The useful question is not “is there a city outside?” — it is “can I clear immigration, see something real, and get back without panic?”
Worth leaving the airport when…
- You have 8+ hours and a visa-free entry (or a transit visa you already hold).
- The city centre is under an hour by train or taxi.
- Luggage can be stored or checked through cleanly.
Stay airside when…
- The layover is under six hours.
- Immigration queues are legendary and you have no buffer.
- You are travelling with kids who need sleep more than sightseeing.
Pre-book the transfer or train ticket. Set a hard “back at security” time two hours before departure for short-haul, three for long-haul. A stopover should feel like a bonus chapter, not a sprint.
